How buffaloes are priced in India
The band above is what sellers asked when they posted, and for buffalo it is driven by milk before anything else. A fresh, high-yielding milch buffalo and a dry one or a male calf are worlds apart in price, so read the band knowing what kind of animal sits at each end of it.
What moves the price
- Milk yield. The single biggest lever — litres per day at the peak of the lactation. A buffalo giving more milk, and giving it consistently morning and evening, is worth more, and buffalo milk's high fat (well above cow's) is part of why.
- Lactation stage and number. An animal freshly calved and in milk, with its calf at foot, fetches the most; a dry or heavily pregnant one is a bet on future milk and is priced lower. First- and second-lactation buffaloes command more than an old one near the end of her milking life.
- Breed. A Murrah — the benchmark dairy buffalo — sits above a nondescript local animal, and a well-bred Murrah or Jaffarabadi with a proven yield is the top of the range.
- Udder and temperament. A sound, well-shaped udder with four working teats and an animal that stands quietly to be milked matter to the price; mastitis or a kicker knocks it down.
The breeds you will actually see
The Murrah of Haryana and Punjab — jet black, with tightly curled horns — is the most valued dairy buffalo in the country and the yardstick everything else is measured against. The Nili-Ravi of Punjab is recognised by its "wall eyes" and white markings; the Jaffarabadi of Gujarat's Gir and Kathiawar is very large with heavy drooping horns. From Gujarat you will also meet the Mehsana (a Murrah–Surti type), the sickle-horned Surti known for high-fat milk, and the Banni of Kutch. The Bhadawari of the UP–MP border gives less milk but the richest in fat.
Before you pay
- Watch a full milking yourself, morning and evening, before you believe a yield figure. A one-time let-down proves nothing.
- Beware of oxytocin — a jab used to force a bigger let-down for the sale. Milking across two real sessions, on different visits if you can, is the guard.
- Feel the udder for lumps or hardness and look for watery or blood-tinged milk (mastitis). See the calf, and read the teeth for age and lactation number.
- Check feet and joints, ask about vaccination (FMD, HS, BQ), and never pay in full in advance for an animal you have not stood beside and watched milk.
A buffalo's price is really a price on her milk. Use the band at the top of this page as your starting point, then judge each animal on what you see her give — not on what the listing claims.
