How we work it out (and why “times seven” is wrong)

A cat does not age at a steady seven human years a year. It tears through kittenhood and adolescence, then settles down. By its first birthday a cat is nearly full-grown and can already have kittens — closer to a 15-year-old human than a 7-year-old. So a single multiplier can never be right.

Vets use a curve instead. The first year is worth about 15 human years and the second about nine more, reaching 24. After that each cat-year adds roughly four human years. Unlike dogs, a cat’s size and breed barely change this — cats are all much of a size — so this calculator asks only for age. It follows the AAHA/AAFP and International Cat Care life-stage guidelines.

The “1 cat year = 7 human years” rule

It is easy to remember and wrong at every age — most of all for kittens, which grow up far faster than a “times seven” count suggests. This page uses the veterinary curve instead.

The grand old age — easy access to food, litter and warm spots, softer food if teeth need it, and closer veterinary care.

How old is my cat in human years?

A cat’s first year is about 15 human years, and its second brings it to about 24. After that, add roughly four human years for every cat year. So a 5-year-old cat is about 36, a 10-year-old about 56, and a 15-year-old about 76. Enter your cat’s exact age in the calculator above for its number.

Is one cat year seven human years?

No — that is a myth. A one-year-old cat is not seven in human terms; it is already physically mature and can have kittens, closer to a 15-year-old human. Cats grow up fast in their first two years and then age more gently, which is why a curve, not a “times seven” rule, is used.

Does my cat’s breed change its age in human years?

Barely. Unlike dogs, where a giant breed ages far faster than a toy one, cats are all much the same size and age at about the same rate whatever the breed. Some breeds tend to live a little longer, but the human-years conversion is essentially the same for a Persian, a Siamese or a moggy — which is why this calculator asks only for age, not size.

When is a cat a senior?

Cats are considered mature from about seven, senior from around eleven, and super senior at fifteen and up. From the mature stage on it is worth a check-up at least once a year — more often for seniors — to catch kidney, thyroid, dental and joint problems early, when they are easiest to manage.

How accurate is a cat age calculator?

It is a good estimate, not a birth certificate — useful most of all for a rescue cat whose birthday nobody knows. The method is the one vets use, but every cat is an individual, and indoor cats often live well into their late teens. For anything health-related, your vet, who can examine the actual cat, is the real authority.
