Understanding Maize Prices
Maize is steadier than perishable produce because it stores well, but it still moves on the sowing and harvest cycle, government procurement and support prices, buffer-stock releases and export policy. A change in support price or an export ban can reset the whole maize market at once.
Rates are usually per quintal at wholesale. The min-max band reflects moisture, foreign matter and grade — clean, dry, well-graded stock sits at the top of the range. Because grain keeps, the six-month trend chart is more meaningful here than any single day's quote. On this page, rates are quoted per kg.
Watch the gap between harvest-season lows and lean-season highs: that seasonal spread, visible in the trend, is often wider than the day-to-day movement.
