36 Funny Dog Names, With Meanings

Dog names that get a laugh — Biscuit, Noodle, Taco, Kong, Gizmo and more, most left as the word-names they are.

A funny dog name usually works one of two ways: it names the dog after food (Biscuit, Waffles, Noodle, Taco, Nacho, Oreo, Cupcake) or it plays hard against the dog's size — a Chihuahua called Tank, a Great Dane called Peanut. This list has a full plate of both.

Most of these are word-names we've left exactly as they are, because a joke name doesn't need an invented etymology to explain it. The few that carry a real meaning are here too — Ninja is Japanese for a stealth warrior, which is funnier the smaller the dog. It runs A to Z below; read a couple aloud and you'll know if it's the one.

How this list is put together

Every name here is one people genuinely use for a pet, and each is drawn from the same hand-checked list behind our full names finder. Where a name has a real, settled meaning we give it; word-names like Biscuit or Shadow are marked as word-names rather than dressed up with an invented origin. The count in the title is the real number on the page, and we add to it over time.
