Shire
Equus ferus caballus
The tallest horse breed — England's black-or-bay draft colossus, bred to pull where engines could not reach.
How to spot it
A massive draft horse usually 16 to 18 hands (163 to 183 cm) and often taller — the breed holds world height records. Black, bay or grey, with white feather on the legs and enormous feet.
Temperament
Docile, patient and willing despite the size — a true gentle giant that is easy to handle for its power.
What it's bred for
Bred in the English Midlands for the heaviest farm, brewery and canal haulage; a Shire can pull several times its own weight. Now kept for driving, showing, forestry and promotion.
Care & upkeep
Needs plenty of feed, large tack and space, with the leg feather kept clean. Like all heavy drafts it manages heat poorly — plan work for cooler hours.
Health & lifespan
Usually around 25 years. Prone to chronic progressive lymphedema in the feathered legs, and the breed is rare enough that conservation breeding matters.
