How to spot it

A compact, strong horse of about 14.1 to 15.2 hands (145 to 157 cm) with an expressive head, arched neck and an upright, energetic way of going. Usually bay, black or chestnut.

Temperament

Friendly, bold and eager, with a people-loving nature that makes it an easy, good-tempered partner for all kinds of riders.

What it's bred for

Every Morgan descends from one 18th-century stallion, Figure (later called Justin Morgan). A true all-rounder, it is ridden and driven across English and Western disciplines alike.

Care & upkeep

A hardy easy keeper that puts on weight readily, so the ration needs watching. Low-maintenance coat and generally sound feet.

Health & lifespan

A long-lived breed, commonly 25 to 30 years. Prone to easy weight gain and the metabolic problems that follow, so keep it fit and lean.
