Friesian Horse
Equus ferus caballus
The jet-black 'baroque' horse of the Netherlands — long flowing mane, feathered legs and a high, showy stride.
How to spot it
A striking black horse of about 15 to 17 hands (152 to 173 cm), always black (a tiny white star is the only marking allowed), with a long thick mane and tail, 'feather' on the lower legs and an elevated, animated knee action.
Temperament
Gentle, people-oriented and willing — often called a cold-blood in a warm-blood's job. Its calm, trainable nature suits amateur riders despite the glamorous looks.
What it's bred for
An old Dutch breed once used in harness and light draft, now a favourite for dressage, carriage driving and film work thanks to its presence and movement.
Care & upkeep
The heavy coat, mane and leg feather need real grooming time, and the dense black coat soaks up heat — give shade, water and cool-hour work in hot climates.
Health & lifespan
A small, closed gene pool means a shorter average life than many breeds (often mid-teens, though many reach their twenties) and raised rates of dwarfism, aortic rupture and retained placenta; buy from breeders who test.
