How to spot it

A tall, elegant, athletic horse of about 15.2 to 17 hands (157 to 173 cm) with correct conformation and powerful, elastic paces, usually bay, chestnut, black or grey.

Temperament

Sensible, trainable and willing — a performance horse bred as much for a cooperative mind as for talent.

What it's bred for

Built from Dutch farm breeds (Gelderlander and Groningen) refined with Thoroughbred and other warmblood blood, under one of the world's most rigorous studbooks (KWPN). It regularly tops international dressage and jumping.

Care & upkeep

An elite athlete that needs good feeding, structured work and attentive farriery and veterinary care to perform and stay sound.

Health & lifespan

Around 20 to 25 years. As a big sport horse it is prone to developmental joint problems; strict studbook health screening helps keep the breed sound.
