Connemara Pony
Equus ferus caballus
Ireland's athletic native pony — hardy, kind and a famous jumper that can carry a grown adult.
How to spot it
A compact, well-balanced pony of about 12.2 to 15 hands (128 to 152 cm), most often grey but also bay, dun and black, with good bone, sloping shoulders and athletic paces.
Temperament
Sensible, kind and willing with great stamina — gentle enough for children yet bold enough for serious competition.
What it's bred for
Developed on the rugged west coast of Ireland as an all-purpose farm and family pony; its jump and movement make it a top performance pony that regularly beats horses, and it crosses superbly with the Thoroughbred.
Care & upkeep
Hardy and thrifty, bred to thrive on poor Atlantic grazing — so, again, weight and rich grass must be managed.
Health & lifespan
A long-lived breed, often 30 years or more. Breeders test for hoof wall separation disease (HWSD), an inherited hoof condition in the breed.
