Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days (9 weeks) from ovulation — usually 58–68 days counting from the mating date. The dates above are counted from the mating day you pick; the example shown starts from today.
How the due date is worked out
You count a pregnancy from the day of mating, because that’s the day you actually know — but it isn’t quite the day she conceived. A female is fertile for several days, and sperm can survive a few days waiting for the eggs, so the real conception can fall anywhere in that window. That’s why a due date is really a due range: this tool adds the average gestation to your mating date for the headline date, then shows the earliest and latest days that are still perfectly normal.
The gestation lengths here are the ones vets and breed sources publish (see below), and the week-by-week timeline is the standard one — when a scan can confirm the pregnancy, when an x-ray can count the litter, and when to have the nesting box ready. None of it replaces a hands-on exam, so the page defers to your vet throughout: they can scan her, count the babies and step in if the birth goes wrong.

Mating & fertilisation
The eggs are fertilised over the next few days. Feed and exercise her exactly as normal — nothing changes yet, and there’s nothing visible to see.
First signs
Some dogs go briefly off their food, a little like morning sickness. A vet can sometimes feel the pregnancy by gently palpating the abdomen around now.
Ultrasound confirms it
From about day 25–30 an ultrasound scan confirms the pregnancy and shows the heartbeats — the earliest reliable way to know for sure.
Her belly starts to show
The abdomen begins to swell. Start increasing her food gradually and move her toward a growth/puppy diet — she’s eating for the litter now.
X-ray counts the puppies
From about day 45 the puppies’ bones show on an x-ray, so the vet can count how many to expect — the only reliable way to know the number before they arrive.
Set up the whelping box
Put the whelping box somewhere quiet now so she settles into it before labour. Her nipples enlarge and milk may start to come in.
Due window opens
Any time from about day 58 is normal. A rectal temperature drop below ~99°F (37°C) usually comes 12–24 hours before labour — a useful heads-up.
Average due date
Most dogs whelp around day 63. Watch for nesting, restlessness, panting and the temperature drop; then the first puppy usually follows within a day.
Call the vet
Past about day 68 from mating (or 65 from ovulation) with no labour, call your vet — she should have whelped by now and may need checking.
When to call your vet straight away
This tool estimates a date — it is not medical advice, and your vet is the authority. Call them without waiting if you see any of these during the birth:
- Strong contractions for 30–60 minutes with no puppy appearing.
- More than 2–4 hours between puppies when you know more are due.
- Dark-green or bloody discharge before the first puppy is born.
- 24+ hours after the temperature drop with no labour, or past day 68 with no signs.
- Obvious distress or collapse, or a puppy visibly stuck in the birth canal.
The window is real — she can safely arrive a few days either side of the average. If your vet tested her progesterone around mating they can give a much tighter date; without it, treat the range as the honest answer.
Get the whelping kit ready before week 8
The one thing owners scramble for at the last minute is the whelping setup. Have it ready before she’s due: a whelping box she can settle into, a heat source for the pups, a gram scale to weigh them daily, clean towels and a puppy milk replacer for backup. That’s why this tool gives a due date and a window, not one certain day.
How can I tell how many puppies she’s having?
Reliably, only with an x-ray from about day 45, once the puppies’ bones have hardened enough to show, or a careful ultrasound. Belly size and breed rules of thumb are guesses — ask your vet for a count so you know what to expect at whelping.
When can a vet confirm the pregnancy?
An ultrasound from around day 25–30 confirms it and shows the heartbeats; an x-ray from about day 45 counts the skeletons. A blood test for relaxin can also confirm pregnancy from around day 25–30.
What is the temperature-drop sign?
In the 12–24 hours before labour a pregnant dog’s rectal temperature usually dips below about 99°F (37°C) from its normal ~101°F. Taking her temperature twice a day near the due date gives you a useful heads-up — but it’s a guide, not a guarantee.
Is a dog due-date calculator accurate?
Treat it as a good guide, not a promise. The mating date isn’t the exact conception date, so the window is real — she can arrive a few days either side. For confirming the pregnancy, counting the litter, or anything worrying, your vet, who can scan and examine her, is the authority.
