Great Dane
A giant, gentle "Apollo of dogs" — towering in size but calm and affectionate at home.
How to spot it
One of the tallest breeds — 71–86 cm at the shoulder and 45–90 kg — yet elegant, with a long neck, a narrow head and a short, sleek coat in fawn, brindle, black, blue or the spotted harlequin pattern.
Temperament
Despite the size, a friendly, patient and dependable companion — a "gentle giant" that is affectionate with family and usually good with children. Its sheer presence deters intruders.
Exercise & training
Needs regular but moderate exercise; growing puppies must not be over-exercised while the joints develop. Early training and socialisation are essential simply because an adult is so large and strong.
Grooming & care
The short coat is easy — a weekly brush. It needs plenty of space, a soft bed to protect the joints, and a big appetite to match; giant breeds are costly to feed and to medicate.
Health & lifespan
Sadly short-lived at about 7–10 years. As a deep-chested giant it is very prone to bloat (a twisted stomach) — feed smaller meals and avoid heavy exercise around mealtimes — and to heart and joint problems.
