Chippiparai
A sleek Tamil Nadu sighthound — fast, hardy and devoted to a single family.
How to spot it
A lean, elegant sighthound about 60–73 cm tall, most prized in a single silver-grey or fawn colour with minimal white. It has a fine, close coat, a long tail and the deep chest and tucked belly of a running dog.
Temperament
Intensely loyal to its own family and aloof with strangers, it makes both a courser and a watchful guard. Bred around Chippiparai in Tamil Nadu, it was once a dog of royalty and is a hardy, dignified companion.
Exercise & training
A fast, high-stamina hound that needs daily running and space. Independent like most sighthounds, it responds best to gentle, consistent, reward-based training.
Grooming & care
The short coat needs virtually no grooming, and the breed thrives in the hot, dry Tamil Nadu climate on very little. A lean dog that likes a soft place to rest.
Health & lifespan
Around 12–15 years and very robust, with few inherited health problems thanks to its landrace origins.
