Beagle
A merry little scent hound with a loud voice and a nose that rules its head.
How to spot it
A small, sturdy hound 33–41 cm tall and 9–11 kg, with long soft ears, a square muzzle and a white-tipped tail. The classic coat is tricolour — black, tan and white — though tan-and-white is common too.
Temperament
Friendly, curious and happy in company, and excellent with children and other dogs. Bred to hunt in packs, it hates being left alone and can be vocal, with a distinctive bay.
Exercise & training
Energetic and needs a good daily walk and play. Training takes patience: a Beagle on a scent will follow its nose and ignore you, so a secure garden and a lead are wise.
Grooming & care
The short coat is low-maintenance — a weekly brush. Check and clean the long ears regularly, and watch the waistline, as Beagles are greedy and gain weight fast.
Health & lifespan
Usually 12–15 years and generally hardy; watch for ear infections, epilepsy and obesity.
