Norwegian Forest Cat
A big, sturdy Nordic cat built for cold — a thick waterproof coat, tufted ears and a calm, friendly nature.
How to spot it
A large, powerful cat — males 6–9 kg — with a long, water-shedding double coat, a full ruff, tufted ears and toes, and a long bushy tail. Triangular head and almond eyes; it looks wild but is a natural, ancient farm breed from Norway.
Personality
Calm, friendly and confident — affectionate with family, good with children and other pets, and a keen climber that likes high perches. Less demanding of attention than a Maine Coon but still sociable.
Grooming & coat care
The double coat is fairly self-maintaining most of the year with a weekly comb, but sheds heavily in spring, when it needs daily combing to clear the dense winter undercoat.
Health & lifespan
Usually 12–16 years. Watch for HCM, hip dysplasia and glycogen storage disease type IV (a DNA test exists); buy from a breeder who screens.
Living with one in India
This is a cold-climate cat under a thick waterproof coat, so heat is a real strain: keep it indoors and cool in summer, ensure constant fresh water, and comb it hard through the moult, which humid weather can prolong.
