Rampur Greyhound
A tall, powerful North Indian sighthound bred by the Nawabs of Rampur for the hunt.
How to spot it
A large, muscular sighthound 56–75 cm tall, taller and more powerfully built than an English Greyhound, with a broad skull, a long muzzle and a short smooth coat — often mouse-grey, brindle, fawn or black.
Temperament
Fearless, loyal and one-family focused, and reserved or sharp with strangers — bred for courage against boar, jackal and even larger game. It is sensitive with its own people and needs a confident, kind owner.
Exercise & training
A hunting hound with great speed and stamina; it needs a lot of daily exercise and room to gallop. Independent-minded, so socialise early and train with patience and rewards.
Grooming & care
The short coat is easy to care for, and the breed suits the North Indian climate. Lean-bodied, it likes warmth in winter and a padded bed.
Health & lifespan
Around 12–15 years. Developed in Rampur in the 19th century, it is a hardy breed; its numbers are now low, so good breeding matters.
