Mudhol Hound
A lean, fast Indian sighthound from Karnataka — loyal, alert and built for the chase.
How to spot it
A tall, graceful sighthound (also called the Caravan Hound) standing about 68–72 cm, very lean and deep-chested with a long narrow head and a slightly domed skull. Coats range from fawn and cream to black, sometimes with white.
Temperament
Loyal and affectionate with its family but reserved and watchful with strangers — a keen guard as well as a hunter. It has a strong prey drive and an independent, dignified streak typical of sighthounds.
Exercise & training
Bred to hunt hare and game over open country, it needs a lot of daily exercise and room to run. Sighthounds are intelligent but independent, so training rewards patience.
Grooming & care
The short coat is very easy to keep and the breed is well-adapted to the hot, dry Deccan climate of northern Karnataka. It carries little body fat, so it appreciates a soft bed.
Health & lifespan
Around 12–15 years and notably hardy — one of India's healthiest breeds, with few inherited problems. The Indian Army has raised Mudhol Hounds for guard and scout work.
