Gaddi Kutta
A powerful Himalayan livestock-guardian — a mastiff-type mountain dog that stands up to leopards.
How to spot it
A large, powerful mountain dog (also called the Himalayan Sheepdog) 51–76 cm tall, with a broad head, a strong build and a thick coat — often black, or black-and-tan — that suits the cold Himalayan foothills. It resembles a lighter, more agile mastiff.
Temperament
Bred by the Gaddi shepherds of Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring hills to guard flocks against leopards and bears, it is brave, protective and territorial, yet loyal and gentle with its own family and livestock.
Exercise & training
A working guardian that needs space, exercise and, ideally, a job. Independent and strong-willed, it needs early socialisation and an experienced, confident owner — it is not an apartment dog.
Grooming & care
The thick double coat needs regular brushing and is built for cold mountain weather, so the breed struggles in lowland heat and is best kept in cooler, hilly regions. Give it shade and water if kept anywhere warm.
Health & lifespan
Around 10–12 years and a hardy landrace with few inherited problems, shaped by generations of hard mountain work.
