Doberman Pinscher
Sleek, fast and fiercely loyal — an elegant guardian and one of the smartest working breeds.
How to spot it
A tall, athletic, square-built dog 61–72 cm at the shoulder and 30–45 kg, with a short glossy coat — usually black, red, blue or fawn with rust markings. The look is lean and powerful.
Temperament
Intelligent, alert and intensely bonded to its family — often called a "velcro" dog. Naturally protective and reserved with strangers, a properly raised Dobermann is loyal and sensitive, not the aggressive stereotype.
Exercise & training
Very energetic and highly trainable — it thrives on training, activity and being with its people, and does poorly left alone in a yard. Early socialisation and consistent handling are a must.
Grooming & care
The short coat needs only a weekly wipe or brush and sheds little. It carries little body fat and a thin coat, so it feels the cold easily and needs shelter in winter.
Health & lifespan
Around 10–12 years. The breed is prone to a serious heart condition (dilated cardiomyopathy) and to von Willebrand's bleeding disorder; buy only from breeders who test for both.
