The tailless cat of the Isle of Man — round, sturdy and dog-like in its devotion.
How to spot it
A rounded, muscular cat 3.5–5.5 kg from the Isle of Man, best known for having no tail (fully tailless "rumpies" through to "stumpies", and even full-tailed cats, occur in a litter). It has a rounded head, a broad chest and longer hind legs that give a rabbit-like hop; coats are short or long.
Personality
Affectionate, playful and loyal — often described as dog-like, following its people about, and known as a good hunter. Placid and adaptable with children and other pets.
Grooming & coat care
The dense double coat needs a weekly brush (more for the longhaired "Cymric"), stepping up during the moult.
Health & lifespan
Usually 12–15 years. The tailless gene, when doubled, causes "Manx syndrome" — serious spinal and nerve defects — so responsible breeding is essential; also watch for arthritis at the tail base. Buy only from a careful breeder.
Living with one in India
The short-coated Manx copes reasonably in a cool indoor home. The important point is not climate but breeding — the tailless gene carries real health risks, so choose a breeder who understands and manages them.
