A small, acrobatic garden bird in blue, yellow and white — a constant at feeders.

How to spot it

A tiny, colourful bird about 12 cm, with a sky-blue cap, wings and tail, yellow underparts, a greenish back and white cheeks crossed by a dark eye-stripe.

Where it lives

Common across Britain, Ireland and Europe in woodland, hedgerows, parks and gardens, and one of the most frequent and acrobatic visitors to garden feeders.

What it eats

Insects and caterpillars — vital for feeding chicks — along with seeds and nuts. It hangs upside down to reach food others cannot.

Song & behaviour

A trilling song and a scolding, churring call. Bold and inquisitive, it once famously learned to peck through foil milk-bottle tops for the cream.

Nesting

It nests in tree holes and nest boxes, laying a large clutch timed so the hungry brood coincides with the spring peak of caterpillars.
